Two young students with autism find enjoyment in reading picture books.
Working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders has changed my perspective on teaching, student engagement and patience.
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) “are a cluster of developmental disorders characterized by social-interaction difficulties, communication challenges and a tendency to engage in repetitive behaviors. However, symptoms and their severity vary widely across these three core areas.” (Symptoms of ASD can be found in the Autism Speaks Website here.)
“My” two boys: on the right is a child with ASD while on the left side sits a student with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Both are deeply immersed with their picture books and quietly sitting down in front of their table inside the classroom. What joy! A priceless reward for any teacher working with special kids!

Working with children regardless of their abilities can be very rewarding (if sometimes frustrating) – I am one of the leaders at out local Scout Troop and sometimes help with Cubs and Beavers too. I vaguely recognise the book on the left – think Alasdair may have read it once when he was in Primary School. Good post for the challenge and for World Book Day 🙂
That’s so true…teaching is so gratifying, regardless of what types of kids we have. 😍
The books that the kids particularly like are those classic picture books, especially Barney’s.💗
